Context to the Meiji Time Period

The Meiji time-period was an era taking place between the years of 1868 and 1912. During this time-period, many revelations came to light, yet still there is much to say, and new innovations regarding the time period to be discovered. During this time, came many innovations, such as the rapid industrial growth having taken place, a new government structure, and the formation of a national identity. This was a time where Japan began looking at other Western nations, who had also begun modernization, while still maintaining previous ideas already present throughout society.

There were also changes made to various laws, including education. The Meiji time-period marked the beginning of the push for education for women. Due to the promotion of modernization in Japan, the leaders during the time-period believed that it was important to actively educate people. This is seen through the implementation of laws, such as the Fundamental Code of Education in 1872, which denied inequality in education, and specifically aimed to incorporate women in schooling.  There eventually came the establishment of more women’s schools, one after another.
